messages · GSM-7 encoding · 160 chars per segment
Plain GSM characters only, so you get the full 160 characters per message. Concatenated messages carry a header, reducing each part to 153.
Add an AI chat agent to your site
Go beyond free tools. ChatFlo builds a custom AI agent that answers questions, resolves tickets, and supports your customers 24/7 — on your website and Shopify store.
How does the Character Counter work?
Type or paste your text — counts update on every keystroke, with nothing to submit.
Watch the progress bars for each platform limit and see instantly how far over you are.
Check the SMS panel to see how many message segments you'll be billed for and which encoding your text triggers.
Trim and re-check until everything fits, then copy your text back out.
Writing support replies that fit and land
Character limits are the easy part. ChatFlo drafts and sends the replies themselves, on your website, Shopify store, and messaging channels.
Consistent replies at any length
Train ChatFlo on your policies and tone so answers come out on-brand whether they're a one-line SMS or a full explanation.
Built for SMS and chat constraints
The AI agent keeps replies tight where the channel demands it, instead of pasting a help-centre article into a 160-character window.
Answers in your customer's language
Multilingual responses come from the same knowledge base, so you don't maintain a separate set of canned replies per market.
Insight into what gets asked
See the questions that come up most and where customers get stuck, then fix the underlying page rather than the reply.

FAQ
It counts by code point, so an emoji counts as one character the way a reader perceives it. Note that several platforms disagree: X counts most emoji as two, and SMS drops to a 70-character limit the moment any emoji appears. The SMS panel accounts for this explicitly.
A single SMS holds 160 characters using the GSM alphabet. Include one character outside that set — an emoji, a curly quote, an em dash — and the whole message switches to UCS-2 encoding, which holds only 70 characters. Longer messages are split into segments, and each segment carries a header that reduces its capacity to 153 (GSM) or 67 (UCS-2).
Around 150–160 characters. Google truncates based on pixel width rather than a hard character count, so treat 160 as a guide and put the important words first. Titles are tighter still, at roughly 60 characters.
Spaces count toward almost every platform limit and toward SMS billing, so the plain character count is the one that matters for publishing. Characters-without-spaces is mainly requested by academic and translation work, where pricing is often quoted per character excluding whitespace.
No. Counting happens entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, stored, or logged, and no account is required.
Yes — words, sentences, and lines are shown alongside the character counts. For reading time, speaking time, and paragraph counts, use the Word Count Calculator linked below.
